On October 16, 2018, Janice Sheridan’s life changed for the better. After three years of living under Houston’s 59th Street Bridge, she moved into her own apartment at CCH’s Woodland Christian Towers (WCT) and now has a safe and comfy place to call home.
Janice was dealing with financial problems and a physical disability when she found herself homeless. With no income and no place to go, she lived for three years in an encampment under the bridge. Her case worker heard WCT was accepting applications. Together, they completed the necessary paperwork and within weeks Janice had the keys to her own one-bedroom apartment.
Janice now has a sense of security and peace of mind. She is no longer living in the elements and is able to take care of her personal needs knowing she has a place to go home.
“This is great – quite a change,” Janice shares. “The apartment was fully refurbished. It’s nice, very clean and the staff is very helpful. I have a feeling of security I didn’t have before.”
When Janice moved into the apartment, not only was it fully furnished, but it also included items necessary for daily living, such as pot and pans, utensils, towels, sheets and the like. “Everything you’d need was here,” Janice shares. “It felt great.”
She also appreciates the helpfulness of the WCT staff. “They are very knowledgeable about resources in the city to assist you, like the local food pantry or a place to pick up toiletries,” Janice says. “I was able to get bus passes so I can get to my doctor’s appointments. With little or no income, these resources are crucial. It’s nice to have a place to call home.”
